The dreaded Mile a Minute Weed/Vine...so glad that everything doesn't grow as fast as this vine does or we would end up strangled and suffocated underneath vegetation. It seems that as fast as you pull it out, it reseeds itself and spreads. It needs at least 60% sun so you see it along the road, on the edges of woods and wetlands. It will also occur in wet areas with poor soil structure.

It is invasive and when it shows itself in one's garden it reeks havoc. It grows over top of vegetation, deflecting light from the plants underneath its mass and causing stress and ultimately decay of those underlying plants. According to the National Park Service's website, mile a minute vine has spread from a nursery in York County to locations as far as 300 miles away.

Moth Mullein, or Verbascum blatteria, is an invasive biennial species native to Eurasia and North Africa. On this morning's walk with the dog, it was blooming despite the Townships' previous attempts to mow the plant down. In order to give you an example of the entire plant, the last picture is from the wikipedia.com. My humble attempts at capturing the flowers are below... enjoy your day!

A beautiful native plant that is very prevalent this time of year. As you can see, it is a haven for bees...especially bumblebees. A member of the aster family, it often grows between 3 - 10 feet tall.
Should you feel that you have been exposed to poison ivy/oak or stinging nettles, you can break the Jewelweed plant stem and rub its juices on your skin. The irritation of the skin will be soothed. It will not cure or totally prevent an outbreak but provides a natural way to soothe the irritation. It is easily found in the damp and shady places along creekbeds or light shade part of the woods. Blooms from May through October (or until the first hard frost). Once you learn what Jewelweed looks like, it is easy to find and useful!!

The pollen from these bright flowers are too sticky to become air borne and pollinated mainly by insects. However, significant handling of these plants will shake loose the pollen causing allergic reactions.
Ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, is very commonly found in waste area spaces such as edges of roads. There has at least 15 species. Every plant has male and female flowers on the plant. The male is the pollen producing flower that is on the tip of the stem. The female flowers form at leaf bases or forks of upper stems.
This pretty yellow flower is prevalent alongside the PA turnpike... its called birds-foot trefoil. Planted by the Turnpike administration to prevent erosion, it is a member of the legume family and is very hardy. It grows in poor soil (sandy or clay), populates in many ways, long tap root, and tolerates salt. Pretty. A weed to many but a pretty splash of color along the road. It is home to about 73 different species of wildflowers. The location gets its name from the Shenk family, who used to operate a ferry across the Susquehanna River. When one gets down to the creek, it is much cooler. You can feel cool air coming through the piled rocks providing much appreciated respite. I have just started hiking again due to my orthopedic issues... I found it very helpful to walk with two hiking sticks. It feels a little like going cross country skiing but it helps.

Since it is physically located down off of Owl Valley Road, one feels as if you are transposed to a time of singing birds, wildflowers, babbling creeks (Kreutz Creek) and simply, peace. It suction cups to the windows. Initially I was concerned that no one visit. So far, I have seen a male wren, several chickadees, and these goldfinches. I stand to the side of the kitchen sink and marvel at the beauty of my fine feathered guests!! The chickadees take the sunflowers and crack them on the side of the feeder. When this first happened, it scared me to the willy nillies because the feeder bangs against the window. As I am looking out, one of the goldfinch were looking at me. Hmmm... what are they thinking?
We came upon beautiful beds of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and flowering shrubs and trees. The rain from Saturday had darkened the mulch and the bark of the trees presenting stark contrast of colors.
However, this past Saturday was a cold, wet, and dreary day...no warm sun. The rain was appreciated. Then on Sunday, BF and I met his sister and her husband for a great time at Longwood Gardens.

I have learned that it is best to visit the Conservatory earliest in the morning or otherwise the crowds make viewing the place simply hopeless. We began our tour at 10 am and it was chilly.

The reward for entering the Conservatory on a cold day is the immediate rush of warmth and fragrant air. The asiatic lilies were in bloom sending wafts of scent throughout the building. Orchids were everywhere since a competition had occurred. Just a few as there were so many flowers and professional photographers.

I will post more pictures soon. There was so much in bloom it would overload this post! Enjoy.

Thus inspired, I have decorated my first bowling ball... glittery, kitchy, and definitely different!

Supplies:

One tube Liquid Nails
3 bags mirrored squares
1 extra large bag of glass stones

I used a metal drip pan from the stove and inverted to become the stand for my bowling ball. I moved the entire ball around on it. I found that a decent pea sized blob of Liquid Nails was necessary to fasten the decorative stones and mirrors to the ball. In 24 hours, the Liquid Nails will be cured. And the ball will grace the edge of the flower bed. For now it looks like:
This audio book was read by the author and she had such wonderful inflections in her voice. Love that. I felt like she was reading to ME!

I travel 40 minutes to work and 45 minutes home everyday. Instead of listening to the radio, I have been listening to audiobooks. Now that I have discovered that I can download books from the public library, I am in heaven!

Great book published in 1962 before cell phones, before computers, before the explosion of cyberspace. Yet, here the author explores time travel, relationships between father and daughter, siblings, working mom, and extraterrestrial beings.... things still relevant.

One of the biggest tie-ins for me was the realization of the girl in regards to her father. She wanted to find her father because she thought he would do everything and make it right. Oh but I want to do everything, says the father. Yes, as a parent, we want to do everything for our children but we can't.Kathyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01667817746820626464noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7353663545503089232.post-74507197507429886832012-03-14T22:33:00.000-04:002012-03-14T22:33:58.853-04:00Bug Eating Plant...Venus Flytrap!

As mentioned before, BF loves carnivorous plants. This flytrap was repotted into a very small and very old aquarium. 50/50 peat moss and sand.

It has such a beautiful flower on such a long stem.
I certainly don't think the 80's were really that long ago.

What started me thinking about my aging musical tastes was when the daughter said something about a game that is played via the computer involving Rick Astley it was called Rickrolling. ACKKK... I have one of his albums...you know, that black vinyl??

I finally dusted it off (literally)!

Published in 1987, the title of the album is "Whenever you need somebody" by Rick Astley. Oh, wait a minute, the record needs to be turned over!

One of my favorite songs besides the title track is TOGETHER FOREVER.
And the lyrics at the end are great:

So don't stop me falling

It's destiny calling

A power I just can't deny

It's never changing

Can't you hear me, I'm saying

I want you for the rest of my life!

So I wanted to know what he was doing now. I first found him singing at 80's get togethers.... I found that horrible! Then I found this YouTube video. It's not too bad. Click on the link below and hear him singing with Rumer.

Oh, go ahead, indulge the 80's child within!
