Montauk Daisy and Plains Coreopsis

Its the end of May... and with all this rain... the weeds are knee high in most of the flowerbeds on campus. I am running out of time before the temperatures climb in the unbearable range. I have a good crew of 3 guys that like to work outside with me and we have been working outside prepping the beds.

We worked on a bed that I planted Montauk Daisy in November of 2006. I don't have a picture but Wow, they are small bush sized! We weeded them out and straightened them out...moving a few of the bushes to fill in gaps where plants had died. We then planted about 15 containers of Plains Coreopsis... this is the picture of Plains Coreopsis that I took at Longwood gardens last summer. I can only hope that my coreopsis will begin to look similar. So far they are much smaller but, they have been struggling with less than ideal conditions. Maybe now that they have been planted with a little fertilizer they will start to be pretty!

We talked briefly how much work goes into making the beds look nice... the guys were wondering if anyone really noticed. I say, yes, they notice and even give out compliments.

  2. Wow, those flowers are so pretty! I don't think I've ever seen them before. They must not be common here in PA or even VA, where I grew up.

I'm sure the ones you planted will look even more beautiful once they catch up.

  3. I looked up Plains Coreopsis... I got the seeds from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center in Austin TX. They are native plants out there, but the plants have migrated out here because they are so striking! I hope they can withstand the intense sun (and lack of residual water). That's the fun part about gardening... waiting for a surprise!

  4. I have always been more of an organic vegetable gardener, but in the past few years I have started landscaping my 34 acre hobby farm & I am alway on the prowl for new plants that work well in upstate NY.

    Thank you for sharing!

  5. Becky... I think the coreopsis is good in zones 3-11... so you are good, I think.

    Have a great day!
